Bridgestone is working with Microsoft to develop a world-first monitoring system for detecting tyre damage issues in real-time, helping to prevent accidents and save lives.
Tyre pressure monitoring systems are fitted as standard on every new vehicle, ensuring that a loss of pressure is identified early, while regular inspection and replacement of tyres can mitigate against wear and fatigue. However, tyre damage – which often cannot be detected without manual inspection – can potentially occur at any time, with no system currently able to detect issues and warn a driver.
Bridgestone’s Tyre Damage Monitoring System can deliver real-time awareness of damage. Using the Microsoft Connected Vehicle Platform’s cloud framework together with existing sensor data (from hardware that is already installed), it runs that information through algorithms to detect events affecting the tyre surface and carcass. The driver can then be immediately notified of the hazard and act accordingly.
This tyre damage monitoring system has other applications; the system not only understands when damage has occurred, but also where, allowing broader insight into road conditions and infrastructure, which can be used to alert the agencies responsible for road damage issues to the presence and location of potholes and other hazards.
Future autonomous vehicles could also be beneficiaries of the system, as vehicles pass information about local hazards to others in the vicinity, as well as cloud data stores.
For now, the system should appeal to fleet managers with their duty of care requirements, while pickup and commercial 4×4 users will be alerted to damage that can be easy to acquire in the rough and tough world that trucks work in.
Currently, Bridgestone’s Tyre Damage Monitoring System is available to all vehicle fleets and OEM’s that use MCVP. There is currently no other equivalent monitoring system available in the market.
