A pickup truck is a workhorse, designed to tow and lug loads, but modern life demands enough performance to at least keep up with traffic, so here are the fastest pickups you can buy in the UK right now.
Of course, few pickups will be able to go head to head with even a middle-of-the-road family hatchback, as there’s a lot more weight to shift, aerodynamics that don’t help progress, and those demands that require torque rather than outright power.
While there are no 500+hp super-pickups in the UK, a few will give a surprising turn of speed when required, so here are the quickest double-cab pickups on sale right now…
5: Nissan Navara
The Nissan Navara has just had a minor facelift, updating the chassis for more comfort, but adding no extra power. That means you’re limited to 190hp from the 2.3-litre turbodiesel engine, and 450Nm of torque. Still, that’s enough to crack 62mph in 11.2 seconds, before heading on to 114mph, at least in the manual. Automatic models accelerate just as well but top out at 111mph. The 163hp model lags behind, taking 12.5 seconds to reach 62mph and maxing out at 106.
4: SsangYong Musso
Powered by a 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine, the Musso produces 181 horsepower and 420Nm of torque. At 11.3 seconds, it takes just a tenth of a second longer than the Navara to hit 62mph, but will carry on all the way to 121mph. There’s quite a penalty for choosing the automatic over the manual though, the 0-62 time rising to 11.9 seconds and the max speed dropping to just 115mph.
3: Ford Ranger
Some may mourn the loss of the 3.2-litre engine in the Ranger (although you can still find it offered on the Wildtrak model) but the 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine offers more power, improved economy and greater performance. In the Limited and Wildtrak models, the 213hp unit and 10-speed automatic gearbox combine with a mammoth 500Nm of torque to accelerate the Ranger to 62mph in nine seconds flat, topping out at 112mph. That’s a full second quicker than the Ranger Raptor!
2: Mercedes-Benz X-Class
While the Mercedes-Benz X-Class X220d might be one of the slowest vehicles on the road, the X350d, with its 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel engine, almost tops our charts. The 258hp is enough to take the truck to 127mph, while 550Nm of torque drags it to 62mph in just 7.9 seconds. You pay a handsome price for such performance, but there’s only one truck that does any better.
1: Volkswagen Amarok
Every Amarok now comes with a 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel engine, but there are two power options. The 204hp model is quick enough to take third place overall, but it’s the 258hp variant that tops our chart and is the fastest pickup truck on sale in the UK. That V6 power can take the Volkswagen Amarok all the way to 129mph, while a simply enormous 580Nm of torque slingshots the truck to 62mph in just 7.4 seconds – that’s faster than the ultimate hot hatch, the Peugeot 205 GTi. The fact it can also carry up to 1,110kg of payload or tow 3.1 tonnes makes the Amarok an impressive all-rounder.
