Launched in 2016, the Fullback is Fiat’s first one-tonne 4WD pickup for Europe, although it is actually built by Mitsubishi in Thailand. As such, the Fiat Fullback engine is in fact Mitsubishi’s recently-developed 2.4-litre unit that features in the L200 and Shogun Sport.
Codenamed the 4N15, the Mitsubishi MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Timing Electronic Control system) unit has a 2,442cc displacement (86mm bore and 105.1mm stroke) over the four inline cylinders. It features 16 valves, double-overhead cams (DOHC), a variable geometry turbocharger and an intercooler.
Fiat Fullback engine performance
There are two power outputs on the Fiat Fullback engine; an entry level 153bhp and the more powerful 178bhp output. Peak power is achieved at 3,500rpm on both versions, while the peak torque figures of 380Nm and 430Nm are reached at 1,500-2,500rpm and 2,500rpm respectively. Due to the light chassis weight of the Fiat Fullback (sub two tonnes), it completes the 0 to 62mph sprint in just 10.4 seconds – the same as the 3.2-litre 197bhp Ford Ranger Wildtrak.
Fiat Fullback fuel economy
The Fiat Fullback is extremely aerodynamic for a pickup which, combined with its light chassis, help give it great fuel economy and keep running costs to a minimum. The lower power output is the more efficient of the two, achieving 34.4 (urban), 46.3 (rural) and 40.9 (combined) according to the official NEDC figures.
The higher output isn’t too far off, however, returning 39.8mpg on the combined cycle; reaching 42.8mpg on rural roads and dipping to 31.0mpg in the city. This puts the Fiat Fullback just below average for fuel economy.
Fiat Fullback Emissions
The engine is compliant with the Euro 6b emission standard, which it meets without the need of Adblue thanks to its lean NOx trap. The main downside to the NOx trap is fuel economy; as it requires extra fuel from the engine for the process to take place.
