Driven: Isuzu D-Max Workman+

The Isuzu D-Max Workman+ is the new trim level designed for the agricultural and trade end of the market. We put the rugged new truck to the test…

Based on the base ‘Utility’ trim, the Workman+ adds extra functionality and enhanced styling features and is limited to just 125 models.

Isuzu D-Max Workman+ Features

From an outside glance, it’s hard to tell whether the Workman+ is a high-spec or entry-level model. The body-coloured bumpers, handles and door mirrors contrast with the 18-inch alloy wheels, side steps, LED lights, and the premium colour scheme – something that we’ve never seen a pickup manufacturer offer before.

However, on the inside, there’s no illusion that this is a no-thrills worker with its single-DIN radio and wipeable plastic flooring. It does, however, inherit all the standard features of the Utility model, including rear fog lights, heated door mirrors, heated rear window, electric windows, remote control central locking, air conditioning and trailer sway control.

On top of the Utility features, Workman+ models also receive a tow bar (with 13-pin connection and compatible with newer trailers with LED lights), full-size spare alloy wheel, side steps and a reversing camera with its view neatly displayed in the rear-view mirror.

Driving and Everyday Use

Another feature that caught our attention was the rear load bed liner, that can be fitted under or above the rail. Very few manufacturers offer this type of liner but it’s extremely effective as it avoids the scratching of the paintwork for those that regularly load from the side or from the back with the tailgate up.

On the road, the Isuzu D-Max isn’t the most refined but, then again, that’s never what Isuzu has been about. Under the bonnet is Isuzu’s newly-developed 1.9-litre engine producing 164PS and 360Nm.

We’ll be testing the new model soon but, from the pictures at least, it’s a much more attractive package than the standard Utility thanks to the side steps and alloy wheels while, at the same time, increasing the practicality through the tow bar, load bed liner and reversing camera.

Isuzu D-Max Workman+ Price and Availability

The Workman+ is available in Splash White, Titanium Silver Met, Obsidian Grey Mica plus the newly-launched and premium Cosmic Black Mica and Sapphire Blue Mica colours. Priced at £21,495 plus VAT, the Workman+ is just a £700 premium on the much more basic Utility double-cab – representing great value for money. It’s available to order now, but production will be limited to just 125 trucks in the UK.

As with every D-Max, it’s covered by Isuzu’s respectable 125,000-mile or five-year warranty. In our Pickup Reliability Survey of almost 500 UK-based pickup truck operators, the Isuzu D-Max emerged as the overall winner. The Workman further enhances D-Max’s image as the vehicle of choice for commercially-focused pickup buyers.
