The Mitsubishi L200 Barbarian is the top of the range model in the L200 line-up, and is aimed heavily at the lifestyle sector. Series 5 models were launched in the summer of 2015, and are competitively priced at £24,299 plus VAT.
With around 8,000 unit sales per year, the Mitsubishi L200 is one of the most popular pickups in the UK. The Barbarian is the best-selling trim level and this is largely down to the competitive pricing (dealers often offer discounts of anywhere between 15 and 25%), low running costs and long specification list compared to other top of the range models.
Cab and interior
The interior of the Mitsubishi L200 Barbarian is one of the most comfortable and luxurious in the pickup sector. The cab is the longest in the class which provides plenty of legroom for front and rear occupants, and the low, sloping bonnet and low sitting windows provides great all-round vision.
Comfort was clearly a priority for the designers of the L200 and the six-way adjustable driver seat is fitted with soft cushions and is one of the most relaxing that we’ve tested. Standard features on the Barbarian include keyless entry and ignition, dual-zone climate control, cruise-control with speed limiter, reversing camera with sensors, blue ‘Barbarian’ LED lights in the foot well and a seven-inch touchscreen display with steering-mounted controls and Bluetooth, USB and auxiliary connectivity.
Mitsubishi L200 engine and driving characteristics
Mitsubishi replaced the aging 2.5-litre engine of the previous generation with a new 2.4-litre engine, which is more powerful and efficient. Barbarian models come with the more powerful 178hp output (there is also a 151hp output), which produces up to 420Nm at 2,500rpm. The engine is coupled to either a six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission.
The L200 is quite quick off the mark and can reach 62mph from standstill in just 10.4 seconds. The engine is quiet although, at speed, road noise starts to build up. Cornering isn’t as pleasant as that of its competitors as the steering is vague and there’s a lot of oversteer.
Mitsubishi L200 off road
Off the road is a different story, however. The Mitsubishi L200 is one of the best pickups in terms of off-roading capabilities due to and comprehensive four-wheel drive system with four settings (2Hi, 4Hi, 4Low and 4Low with locking rear differential), its broad axle articulation and its lightweight structure, which makes it surprisingly nimble.
The chassis sits quite low, so the ground clearance (205mm), approach (30 degrees), departure (22 degrees) and ramp over angles (24 degrees) are quite disappointing. There are, however, a lot of cutting edge off-road features like hill start assist and the Mitsubishi Active Stability and Traction Control (MAST-C) system with brake assist.
Load area and towing
In terms of practicality, the L200 is pretty poor. The load area is one of the smallest of any double cabs measuring 1,470mm wide by 1,470mm long by 475mm high, while the payload is rated at 1,050kg. At 3.1 tonnes, the towing capacity also falls short of its rivals but the L200 is still capable of carrying up to 990kg in the load area while towing the full amount, whereas it can be as little as 200kg on the rivals.
Cost of ownership
The running costs of the Mitsubishi L200 Barbarian are one of the lowest in the sector, with impressive fuel consumption of 42.8mpg combined (official NEDC figures) and a long and a five-year warranty (although it is capped at 62,500 miles). The service intervals are also fairly limited at 12,500 miles or every year.

The Mitsubishi L200 Barbarian has a lot to offer; has a spacious cab, great visibility, tight turning circle, its quick off the mark and is great off-road, although it isn’t the most practical and the ride isn’t great. Priced at £24,299 plus VAT (£25,699 plus VAT for the automatic), the Mitsubishi L200 Barbarian is far affordable than most of its top spec rivals and represents great value for money considering its long list of features.
