The Nikola Badger is the latest electric pickup truck to be announced from Utah-based start-up Nikola. With an estimated range of 600 miles, the Badger will be built in conjunction with an established manufacturer – so far unknown but believed to be Ford F150 – and will produce up to 906hp (455hp continuously) and 1,329Nm.
Nikola says the Badger has been developed to outperform all the announced electric pickup trucks, like the Tesla Cybertruck and Rivian R1T, for towing, performance, range and practicality, with a 15W power outlet for power tools and compressors.
“Nikola has billions worth of technology in our semi-truck program, so why not build it into a pickup truck?” said Trevor Milton, CEO, Nikola Corporation.
“I have been working on this pickup program for years and believe the market is now ready for something that can handle a full day’s worth of work without running out of energy. This electric truck can be used for work, weekend getaways, towing, off-roading or to hit the ski slopes without performance loss. No other electric pickup can operate in these temperatures and conditions.”
Electric or fuel cell?
While all versions of the Badger will be powered by the 906hp and 1,329Nm electric motor, there is a choice between either a 160kWh lithium-ion battery or a 120kWh fuel cell. Nikola is working with hydrogen producers to lower the cost of hydrogen production.
Weights and loads
The gross vehicle weight is rated at 4,536kg with a payload of around 1,000kg and towing capacity of 3,629kg. What’s interesting is that Nikola has stated the fully loaded truck and trailer, with a combination weight of 8,165kg will be able to launch from standstill on a 30% gradient without stall – impressive!
Nikola Badger price and availability
The Nikola Badger will make its first appearance at Nikola World 2020 in Phoenix later this year, although prototypes will be available for select customers and media to ride in at Nikola World. Don’t worry, we’re onto them!
